The Last Quarter Moon A Time to Release, Let Go & Make Space

The Moon is growing darker.

After the brightness of the Full Moon and the gentle reflection of the Waning Gibbous, we arrive at the Last Quarter Moon.

Only half of the Moon is illuminated now.

The lunar cycle is moving towards its quiet ending.

And with that comes an important invitation:

Let go.

Not everything that entered your life during this cycle needs to come with you into the next one.

Some things have served their purpose.

Some habits can be left behind.

Some worries no longer need your attention.

Some old stories are ready to end.

The Last Quarter Moon is a time to release what feels heavy and create space for what comes next.

The Spiritual Meaning of the Last Quarter Moon

The Last Quarter Moon is traditionally associated with release, clearing, forgiveness, boundaries and letting go.

It is a time to look honestly at what is taking up space in your life.

Not everything we carry is visible.

Sometimes it is an old belief.

A fear.

A relationship pattern.

A grudge.

A habit.

An expectation.

Or the pressure to be someone we no longer want to be.

The Last Quarter Moon asks:

What am I ready to put down?

Letting Go Doesn't Mean Forgetting

When we talk about release, it doesn't mean pretending something never happened.

It doesn't mean you weren't hurt.

It doesn't mean you have to forgive someone before you're ready.

And it doesn't mean you have to stop caring.

Sometimes letting go simply means deciding:

"I don't want to carry this in the same way anymore."

You can remember without reliving.

You can learn without remaining stuck.

You can honour your past without allowing it to control your future.

Release can be gentle.

A Last Quarter Moon Ritual for Release

This ritual is designed to help you identify something you'd like to release and symbolically create space for something lighter.

What You'll Need

A white or black candle

Black Tourmaline

Smoky Quartz

Selenite

A journal and pen

A fire-safe bowl if you choose to safely burn paper

Sage or another cleansing method, if this forms part of your spiritual practice

You do not need to burn anything for this ritual. Writing and tearing the paper is a perfectly meaningful alternative.

Step 1 — Clear Your Space

Find somewhere quiet.

Light your candle.

If you use sage or another cleansing method, gently cleanse your space.

Take several slow breaths.

As you do, say:

"I clear what is heavy. I make space for peace."

Allow your shoulders to relax.

You don't need to solve anything right now.

You're simply creating space to listen.

Step 2 — Name What You're Ready to Release

Take your journal.

Write:

"I am ready to release..."

Then finish the sentence.

It could be:

I am ready to release my fear of failure.

I am ready to release the need to please everyone.

I am ready to release an old version of myself.

I am ready to release resentment.

I am ready to release the belief that I am not enough.

Don't judge whatever appears.

Sometimes naming something is the first step towards loosening its hold.

Step 3 — Hold Your Smoky Quartz

Take your Smoky Quartz.

Close your eyes.

Think about the thing you've chosen to release.

Rather than forcing it away, imagine yourself gently placing it down.

You don't need to carry it everywhere.

Take a slow breath in.

Then breathe out.

As you do, say:

"I honour what this has taught me. I release what I no longer need to carry."

Repeat this several times if it feels right.

Step 4 — Create Your Release

Take the piece of paper where you've written what you're releasing.

You can tear it into small pieces and discard it.

If you choose to burn it, only do so safely in a suitable fire-safe container and never leave flames unattended.

As you release the paper, say:

"This no longer belongs in the next chapter of my story."

Then take a moment to breathe.

Step 5 — Make Space

Now hold your Selenite.

Think about what you would like to welcome into the space you've created.

Perhaps:

Peace

Confidence

Self-respect

Love

Creativity

Freedom

Rest

New opportunities

Write one word in your journal.

This becomes your gentle reminder:

When you release something, you create room for something new.

Last Quarter Moon Journal Prompts

Find a peaceful place and write freely.

What am I ready to let go of?

What has been taking more energy than it deserves?

What belief about myself no longer feels true?

What am I carrying that isn't mine to carry?

Where do I need stronger boundaries?

What would feel lighter if I stopped trying to control it?

What do I want to leave behind before the next New Moon?

And finally

What could I make room for if I finally let this go?

You Don't Have to Carry Everything

There is a strange beauty in the Moon becoming darker.

We might normally think of darkness as something to fear.

But the lunar cycle reminds us that darkness has a purpose.

It creates space.

It gives us time to rest.

It allows us to release.

And it prepares us for another beginning.

You are allowed to put things down.

You are allowed to outgrow people, habits, beliefs and versions of yourself.

You are allowed to say:

"This was part of my story, but it doesn't have to be part of my future."

Release With Compassion

You don't need to force yourself to release something overnight.

Some things take time.

Some wounds need patience.

Some changes happen slowly.

Be gentle with yourself.

Release doesn't have to mean forgetting.

It can simply mean choosing not to let the past decide what happens next.

Let the Moon remind you:

You can become lighter without becoming less.

Preparing for the New Moon

The lunar cycle is nearly complete.

The light will continue to fade until the Moon disappears into darkness once more.

Then comes the New Moon.

A blank page.

A new seed.

A new intention.

Before you begin again, give yourself permission to leave something behind.

Take only what you need.

Let the rest go.

Follow the Moon

The cycle continues:

🌑 New Moon — Begin

🌒 Waxing Crescent — Believe

🌓 First Quarter — Act

🌔 Waxing Gibbous — Refine

🌕 Full Moon — Shine

🌖 Waning Gibbous — Reflect

🌗 Last Quarter — Release

🌘 Waning Crescent — Rest

Soon the Moon will disappear from view.

And in that darkness, another beginning will be waiting.

Follow the Moon. Find your rhythm.
